Note that on 4…Nd7 5.Bc4 c5?? 6.Ng5 e6 7.Bxe6 Nh6 8.Bxf7+ Nxf7 9.Ne6 Qf6 9.Nd5 Qxe6 10. Nc7+ wins the queen. 4…Nd7 5.Bc4 c5?? 6.Ng5 e6 7.Bxe6 fxe6 8.Nxe6 and now 8…Qa5 is best ( 8…Qb6 9.Nd5 and 10.Nc7+ wins; 8…Qe7 9.Nd5 Qxe6 10.Nc7+ wins the queen, or 8…Qf6 9.Nd5 Qxe6 10.Nc7+ wins the queen), but after 9. Nxg7+ Kf7 10. Nh5 gxh5 11.Qxh5+ white has three pawns for the piece, Black can never castle, and Black’s king is exposed.

Against 4…Nd7, I recommend 5.Bc4, when many moves for Black lose, for example 6…Ngf6?? 6. e5 and best is 6…Ng4 7. Bxf7+ Kxf7 8. Ng5+ Kg8 9. Qxg4 threatens 10. Qe6+ and mate; if 9…Nxe5 10.Qf4 and wins as moving the knight on e5 is met by 11 Qf7# If 6…Ng8 7.Bxf7+ Kxf7 8.Ng5+ and now either 8…Ke8 9.Ne6 wins the queen or 8…Kf8 9.Ne6+ also winning the queen. 6…Nh5 7.Bxf7+ Kxf7 8.Ng5+ Kg8 (Again, Kf8 9. Ne6+ or Ke8 9. Ne6) 9.Ne6 Qe8 10.Nxc7 wins. If 6…dxe5 7.dxe5 and after either Ng4 or Nh5, 8. Bxf7+ Kxf7 9.Ng5+ wins, as if Kg8 10. Qd5+ and mate,and if Ke8 10.Ne6 wins the queen, and if Kf8 10. Ne6+ wins the queen. Also 6…e5?? 7.Bxf7+ Kxf7 8.Ng5+ and all king moves lose: 8…Kf6 9.Nd5#, 8…Kf8 9.Ne6+ winning the queen, 8…Ke8 9.Ne6 queen moves 10.Nxc7+ winning the rook on a8. 8…Ke7 9.Nd5+ and Black must play either 9…Kf8 10.Ne6+ winning the queen, or 9…Ke8 10.Ne6 queen moves 11.Nxc7+ winning the rook on a8. 5…b6?? for example allows White to carry out his threat of 6.Bxf7+ Kxf7 7.Ng5+ and if 7…Kf6 8.Qf3#, 7…Kf8 8.Ne6+ wins the queen, and 7…Ke8 8.Ne6 wins the queen. In one game Black played 5…c5?? 6.Ng5 (6…e6 7.Bxe6 Nh6 (7…fxe6 Nxe6 wins) 8.Bxf7+ Nxf7 9.Ne6 Qe7 (9…Qa5 10.Nxg7+ Kf8 11.Ne6+ (with the plan of Bd2 and Nd5 winning the queen) and Black cannot try to save his queen with Ke7 12. Bd2 Kxe6 13.Nd5 Qd8 because of 14.Qg4#; 9…Qb6 10.Nxg7+ Kf8 11.Ne6+ and if 11. Kg8 Nd5 threatens Nxb6 and Ne7#; if 11. Ke7 12.Nd5+ wins the queen; and if 11…Ke8 12.Nd5 and if the queen moves away from the defense of c7, 13.Nc7+ wins; 12…Qa5+ 13.Bd2 followed by 14.Nc7+) 10. Nd5! and if 10…Qxe6 11.Nc7+ wins the queen) Nh6 6.Bxf7+ Nxf7 7.Ne6 forking queen and bishop; after the queen moves, 8.Nxg7+ wins as White is a pawn up and Black can’t castle and Black is too far behind in development. Better are 5…e6, which can be met by 6.Bg5, or 5…Nb6, met by 6.Bb3 a5 7.a4 Nf6 8.h3 followed by 9.0-0 and Be3, or 5…h6 (met by 6.0-0 e5 7.Be3 Nb6 8.Bb3 and if a5 9.a4), or 5…Nh6, met by 6.0-0 Nb6 7.Bb3 0-0 (again if a5 8.a4) 8.Bg5, or 5…c6, which is met by 6.0-0, when Black’s lack of center control favors White.
